The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on medical students’ mental health and sleep quality in Jordan: a nationwide cross-sectional study

Abstract Background COVID-19 pandemic is expected to affect the mental health, especially among medical students. Data from literature in Jordan are scarce, during second wave of pandemic. We aimed assess students’ level fear, prevalence depressive and anxiety symptoms—represented psychological distress (PD)—and sleep quality (SQ) amid current COVID-19. A total 2104 students were included through convenient sampling six schools Medicine Jordan. Online-based questionnaire using Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) scale, Fear scale (FCV-19S), Sleep Quality Scale (SQS) was used collect data. Chi-square, t -tests, ANOVA establish associations. Results 88.4% 47.4% found have PD poor or just fair on SQS, respectively, with ranging mild (18.6%) severe (42.1%). Calculated FCV-19S score 14.62 (SD=5.38), indicating high fear. Students excellent SQ had significantly lower rates depression, anxiety, as compared those good, fair, ( P < 0.001 for all). Conclusion Jordanian appear be susceptible impact health reported PD. While fear still considered high, they remarkably than that early studies. strongly recommend providing resources access professional care reporting and/or symptoms depression.
